A Nashville mail carrier has been federally charged after a viral video exposed him discarding mail in dumpsters. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee announced that 33-year-old DuJuan Butler of Antioch faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for unlawfully detaining and delaying mail.
The incident occurred in August, when a resident filmed Butler dumping mail containers near her apartment complex. The footage spread rapidly across TikTok and other platforms, drawing millions of views and public outrage. The United States Postal Service placed Butler on non-duty status and dispatched recovery teams to retrieve as much of the discarded mail as possible.
The USPS Office of Inspector General and federal prosecutors continue to investigate. Authorities have not disclosed how long Butler had been disposing of mail or the total amount affected.
